Gonzalo Higuain, who scored 23 times for Juventus last season in all competitions, is also not included, but Mario Mandzukic returns after a five-year absence.

Egypt and Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has been named in global players' association FIFPro's 55-name shortlist for its World11 of 2018 award.

All 55 players were selected by fellow professional footballers, as 25 000 players from 65 different countries voted for one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards.

The final FIFA FIFPro World XI will be announced at a ceremony in London on Monday, September 24.

Dejan Lovren, who reached both the World Cup final and Champions League final with country and club, is named amongst the defenders - with Virgil van Dijk also part of the 20 man defenders list.

The Best FIFA FIFPro World 11 for the year 2018 football season have shortlisted a 55-man list.

The two sides have a lot of players nominated by Federation Internationale de Football Association to be in their team of the year, more than any other clubs including Man City and PSG. Luka Modric, who won UEFA Player of the Year, is the stand-out among their nominations after taking Croatia to the World Cup final.

De Gea is joined by Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Buffon, Real Madrid duo Thibaut Courtois and Keylor Navas as well as Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The FIFPro World 11 has been announced every year since 2005 and under Rafa Benitez Liverpool players were included in the three years from 2007 to 2009.

The other defenders with the most votes are Jordi Alba, Dani Alves, Dani Carvajal, Virgil van Dijk, Diego Godin, Mats Hummels, Joshua Kimmich, Marcelo, Yerry Mina, Gerard Pique, Thiago Silva, Kieran Trippier, Raphael Varane, Sime Vrsaljko and Kyle Walker.
