Gunman Kills his Wife, 4 Others and Himself in California

The names of the gunman and the five people he's said to have killed weren't immediately available.

It was unclear what Casarez did for a living, but there may have been some connection between his family and the trucking business, Youngblood said.

The man then ran from the scene, going to another nearby residence and fatally shooting two more people.

The woman whose vehicle was taken, and her child, were unharmed, he said.

The sheriff says authorities are investigating how the other victims were involved.

"Six people lost their lives in a very short period of time", he said.

Deputies are now interviewing about 30 people who witnessed the string of shootings.

Another male then fled from the building, and the gunman gave chase, getting into his vehicle and driving to the front of a nearby hunting equipment shop. He said Cazarez and his estranged wife Petra went to TNT trucking to confront Valdez, an employee there.

Investigators are still trying to piece together how five victims of a mass shooting in Bakersfield are connected.

The video shows Kern County Sheriff's deputies pointing their automatic rifles at Javier Casarez as he stood near a white SUV in what appeared to be a parking lot in Bakersfield on Wednesday.

Youngblood said at least a single handgun was used in the attacks, and he did not know if other weapons were deployed.

The suspect shot the man before turning the gun on his wife, Youngblood said. "There's a reason for that, and we need to find that reason", the sheriff said.

Police got the first call about the shooting at the trucking business at 5:19 p.m. The chief said the shootings have the implication of "domestic violence".

"I'm certainly speculating right now", Youngblood said. Officers gave chase and the suspect pulled into a business, got out of the auto and shot himself, King said.

"Obviously, these are not random shootings", said Youngblood, but could not elaborate on the possible motive of the attacker.
