Russian Federation carries out biggest war games since cold war

Russia launches what it has called its largest ever military drills, with hundreds of thousands of Russian troops taking part along with Chinese soldiers in a massive show of force that has rattled the West.

While both Russian Federation and China have said the manoeuvres are not directed against other countries they do coincide with Nato's Rapid Trident 2018 military exercise in Ukraine, which started on September 3 and ends on Saturday.

Vostok 2018 comes amid increasing tensions between Moscow and the West over Russia's involvement in the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria.

- Russian air force's S-300 and S-400 missile systems have been deployed at Vostok 2018 drills.

- Three brigades of Russian paratroops will play a key role, during drills at the Tsugol military range, near Russia's borders with China and Mongolia.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has said it will closely monitor the exercise, as will the U.S., which has a strong military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Week-long deployment alongside Chinese, Mongolian armies dubbed "Vostok-2018" will start in eastern Siberia on Sep.

Exercises similar in scale have not been held since 1981 when the Zapad-81 drills that involved about 100,000 troops were held in the Soviet Union's Belarusian, Kiev and Baltic Military Districts and in the Baltic Sea.

Peskov has earlier said Russia's "ability to defend itself in the current worldwide situation which is often aggressive and unfriendly to our country is justified, essential and without alternative".

"We have trustworthy ties in political, security and defense spheres", said Putin, who also posed for a photo op with his Chinese counterpart to cook up traditional blini pancakes.

"I see little in the long term that aligns Russian Federation and China", he said.

"This is a very important exercise, but it is still part of the annual routine development of the Russian armed forces", he said.

Vostock includes many smaller scale exercises that happen every year and obsolete equipment has also been put into use, apparently to inflate the war games size, Jack Watling, an expert at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), wrote in an article this month.

"The Vostok 2018 troop exercises have begun in Russia's Far East", the defence ministry said in a report by TASS.

The Russian Ministry of Defense yesterday broadcast images of military trucks being transported on trains, columns of tanks, armored vehicles and warships on the move, and combat helicopters and fighter aircraft taking off.

Russian Federation has denied the drills are a cause for worry.

Part of Russia's response has been to increase the number of large-scale military exercises across the globe in an apparent bid to project power and ward off perceived Western aggression.
