There's been a lot of talking - Sterling explains Arsenal goal celebration

The match starts at 23:00 on 12 August 2018.

"We know about our expectations and we realize there is a really positive atmosphere around us in the pre-season", manager Juergen Klopp said. The only disappointing aspect of City's performance was that they lacked the clinical edge that saw them waltz past teams last season. The French full-back claimed an assist for Silva's goal but Guardiola says he has a lot to improve.

Arsenal rarely threatened as an attacking force until the introduction of Alexandre Lacazette for the willing but unrewarded Aaron Ramsey early in the second half. But it's just one game [in the Premier League]. His season began against record-breaking champions of last season, Manchester City. And it felt like they seamlessly continued that form as they comfortably defeated an Arsenal side looking slightly disjointed in their first competitive match under Unai Emery.

It was clear at the Emirates Stadium that Arsenal's players were trying to stick to Emery's philosophy of pressing high and playing out from the back. Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan performed their defensive duties diligently in wide positions but their passing inside the final third was often wayward. The centre-back pairing, consisting of John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Vincent Kompany or Nicolas Otamendi is likely to have a tough afternoon ahead.

Instead, the tactical fascination was provided by Guardiola's City, who yet again demonstrated their structural flexibility with some curious positional arrangements that dragged Arsenal out of shape.

Guardiola wants his full-backs to overlap more regularly this season.

Guardiola will not let complacency creep into his team and will want to be the first manager to defend the Premier League crown since Sir Alex Ferguson won back to back titles in the 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons.

The latter tactic actually proved more effective, creating obvious one-versus-one battles for Sterling vs. Hector Bellerin, on one occasion cutting inside and slamming home the opener.

"Right winger, left winger, striker, and also yesterday he worked with us at left-back - his performance was good! We must remain grounded when we win and united when we don't". Not every game will be against a team as good, as well coached, as cold-blooded as Man City.

"When you play against a team of City's quality and confidence it is always going to be hard".
