Israeli strike kills two Hamas militants in Gaza

The Hebrew newspaper "Haaretz" quoted an unnamed Israeli political official as saying that a comprehensive settlement in the Gaza Strip would not take place without the return of Israeli soldiers and the bodies of their soldiers detained by Hamas in Gaza. "An IDF tank targeted the post from which the shots were fired", the military said.

The Israeli strike reportedly hit a graduation ceremony of al-Qassam at a Hamas military base with senior Hamas figures in attendance.

Hamas issued a statement threatening to retaliate for the deaths.

The incident came after Egyptian-brokered talk to achieve cease-fire between Israel and Hamas reached an impasse.

A video released by the Israeli military shows two men in a watchtower, said to be in northern Gaza, and puffs of smoke as one appears to open fire.

Ezzeddine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, for its part, said that the two Palestinians were Abdulhafeth Silawi 23, and Ahmad Murjan 23 from the Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza strip and they belong to the brigades.

The cross-border incident came after a delegation of senior Hamas officials visited Gaza to discuss a ceasefire agreement with Israel proposed by the United Nations and Egypt.

In the past four months, there has been an upsurge in violence along the Gaza-Israel border.

The tension in Gaza has been high since the Palestinians launched massive anti-Israel rallies in March, known as "the Great March of Return", which demanded the lift of the blockade Israel has imposed on Gaza since 2007.
