State lawmakers unanimously passed the law previous year to designate each August 4 as a commemorative holiday to celebrate the 44th president, whose political career began in IL.

Barack Obama turned 57-years-old on Saturday, and with that in mind, his wife, Michelle Obama, recognized his special day with a heartwarming message on Instagram.

An early version of the bill wanted the day to become a legal holiday with paid time off and closed government offices, but the final version made it a commemorative holiday instead, according to The Hill. He began the first of two terms in the White House in 2009.

Michelle isn't the only one commemorating the former president's birthday today! "Last week's trip to Dog Tag Bakery was no different. Happy birthday to my brother, my friend, @BarackObama". "We miss you, and know that we'll continue fighting everyday to preserve your legacy".

Wishing a Happy Birthday to President Barack Obama and Happy #ObamaDay to Everyone! He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.
