'I thought it was a doll': Baby found floating in river dies

Authorities say the approximately eight-month-old child was spotted floating in the river near 89 South St. just after 2 p.m. "Its little head was under the water, but his little legs were over", Diana Campbell said. It wasn't clear how long the baby had been in the water.

Authorities investigate the death of a baby boy who was found floating in the water near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan, on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018, in NY. The baby was pronounced dead at NY Downtown Hospital.

The baby, dressed only in a diaper, was floating in the East River, about 30 feet offshore. "I called 911. At that point I thought it was a doll", Mr. Campbell told the AP.

Police say the child was found laying on an embankment at the water's edge.

Police climbed over the safety railing to retrieve the baby, then brought him to the pedestrian walkway where they performed CPR, officials said.

The cause of death is unclear, and his body showed no signs of trauma.

Diana Campbell posted a news story about the incident on her Facebook, adding, "Asking for prayers for this handsome baby boy. someone out there knows what might have happen to him". He said the baby had no respiration and showed no pulse.

The East River running between Manhattan and Brooklyn is a heavily trafficked tidal estuary subject to strong currents. Both park-lined shorelines are usually teaming with tourists this time of year.
