Jose Mourinho emphasises that he is desperate for Manchester United to bring in more players before the transfer window closes next week.

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld and Chelsea midfielder Willian among the top transfer targets he is urging United officials to sign, but there appears to be a reluctance to back the manager who failed to win a trophy last season. But if they fail to bring in reinforcements, Mourinho has predicted hard times for the 20-time Premier League/First Division champions.

"My CEO has known what I want for quite a long time".

Martial had left the club's pre-season tour of the United States early to attend the birth of his second child, ensuring he missed matches against Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid - a move which saw Mourinho hit out at the youngster both verbally and through his bank account.

United were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, five days before their Premier League campaign begins at home to Leicester.

"So if we don't make our team better it will be a hard season for us".

"It was fantastic, absolutely fantastic. Players are not going to be here on Friday and we have to go with best possible team and with a great mentality".

Mourinho, according to sources, does not want an unhappy player in his dressing room but Woodward is reluctant to part company with a young player who still has two years on his contract.

"Of course, he respected Rooney and then Zlatan wanted to have it".

"He was in the shadow, waiting for the opportunity and now the shirt is empty". The shirt, however, is one of those special ones which carries a privilege at Old Trafford, and when United gave Wayne Rooney the shirt in 2007, it was worthy of a special announcement from the club with Denis Law being pictured in a photoshoot "gifting" the shirt to Rooney.
