Hausknecht murder suspect kills self in confrontation with Houston Police

Pappas walked away with his arms raised, and the parks employee found a wallet he used to identify Pappas.

Police had warned that Pappas could be armed and unsafe, and - thanks to his law enforcement background - might have access to police radio and tactical channels to monitor the dragnet police had cast to catch him, Acevedo said. He was not complying with the commands of the first responding officer and killed himself once a second officer arrived, the chief said.

Police had said shots that Pappas allegedly fired at Hausknecht as he also rode on a bike "took some skill".

They say they believe Pappas shot and killed Dr. Mark Hausknecht as both men rode bicycles in Houston on July 20.

The police chief said Pappas held a longtime grudge against the cardiologist, who had operated on his mother more than 20 years ago. Police believe that is the motive in the murder of the doctor.

Their discussions take place around the time or shortly before police say officers made contact with Pappas - who police said shot himself to death at around 9:35 a.m.

Pappas was wanted in the murder of local cardiologist Mark Hausknecht, who previously treated the 41st president.

According to a charging document released on Friday, police also found in Pappas' home three boxes of.22-caliber ammunition, the same type that was recovered from the scene of Hausknecht's shooting.

"You don't wear body armor when you are thinking of suicide."

"Now my family and I have joined the ranks of the tens of thousands of other grieving Americans who lose innocent loved ones each year", she said a day after her husband died.

They did not find Pappas, but they did uncover an extensive amount of evidence while executing search warrants on the home, including a "very extensive intelligence file" he'd put together on Hausknecht, Acevedo said. Hausknecht worked on the campus of the Texas Medical Center, a sprawling complex that encompasses multiple hospitals.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a statement that Pappas's death closed a chapter in a horrific tragedy.

Even as the manhunt dragged on earlier Friday, Pappas' activities since Hausknecht's killing were becoming more clear. The gunman fatally shot the cardiologist, who was dressed in blue scrubs, twice in his torso less than one mile from the hospital. The police chief said the markman's suicide might have saved lives and avoided a shoot out. He then worked as a reserve officer for the same constable offices until 2013.

Within minutes, police units were deployed to the area and an officer spotted Pappas, according to Acevedo.
