Bookies go from pariahs to partners in NBA deal

The NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver have been out in front of the changes in legalized gambling - both as it moved through the process to the Supreme Court, which made it a state issue, but also the changes in societal norms - and the league took the next step in that area on Tuesday.

The NBA, concerned with integrity after a US Supreme Court ruling that could allow sport gambling in every state, announced Tuesday a partnership with sports betting operator MGM Resorts International. So still no integrity fee, but instead a form of "compensation" for the use of data or, as the leagues would prefer to call it, intellectual property.

However, the converted Race & Sports Book at Borgata opened just a few hours later, becoming the first Atlantic City casino to get in on the action. "And I think that, ultimately, it was on us to convince MGM there was a commercial benefit to compensating us for that data".

What the deal doesn't do, however, is prevent people from betting on games anywhere but MGM properties.

In the near term, MGM will be allowed the unprecedented luxury of posting National Basketball Association team logos on the boards in its sportsbooks in casinos throughout the well as on its PlayMGM app, which is available in states where online sports wagering is legal. Additionally, MGM Resorts has served as the title partner of the Las Vegas Summer League the past two years. Currently MGM's sports betting app will only be active in Nevada, the only state that has active mobile sports betting, but New Jersey expects to have mobile sports betting running by the end of August.

MGM will be an official casino partner for the league, but will not have exclusive rights to the data. As such, Nevada sports betting regulations stipulate the company can not offer action on the team.

"The NBA has always been an innovator at the forefront of sports evolution, and MGM Resorts is thrilled to partner with the league to revolutionize sports betting in the United States", Murren said. MGM Resorts International will be the league's official gaming partner.

According to Silver and MGM officials, the casino company is buying data.

The joint venture with the United Kingdom-based owner of Ladbrokes, GVC Holdings, will lead to the creation of a sports betting and online gambling platform in the us with a mobile app and website featuring odds and highlights.

The NBA and its commissioner, Adam Silver, have been outspoken in their support of legalized sports gambling. Expanding throughout the US and around the world, the company opened MGM Cotai in Macau in February 2018. NBA Digital's assets include NBA TV,, the NBA App and NBA League Pass.
