'Terrible mistake' - Hunt misidentifies wife as Japanese rather than Chinese

Speaking ahead of the visit, Hunt said: "The UK and China are both major powers with a global perspective".

Chinese-Japanese relations have been mired in tensions since Japan's invasion of China before and during the Second World War.

Mr Hunt took over from the gaffe-prone Mr Johnson - who once referred to Africans as "flag-waving piccaninnies" with "watermelon smiles" in a newspaper column - after his dramatic resignation over Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit blueprint.

At the beginning of their meeting, Hunt sparked laughter when he misidentified his Chinese-born wife as being Japanese. That´s a awful mistake to make.

He continued nevertheless, saying that his wife is Chinese, his children are half-Chinese and they have Chinese grandparents in the ancient northern Chinese city of Xian.

The two diplomats held an in-depth exchange of ideas related to free trade, multilateralism and global governance at the 9th China-UK Strategic Dialogue, according to a press release by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Hunt is on a visit to Beijing to discuss post-Brexit trade deals between the United Kingdom and China.

"The responsibility for the trade imbalance between China and the United States lies not with China", Wang said, citing the global role of the USA dollar, low U.S. savings rates, huge levels of U.S. consumption and USA restrictions on high tech exports as amongst the reasons.

He added: 'We also raised consular cases, including that of the Simpson children.

The Chinese foreign minister also blamed Washington for the trade imbalance between the two countries, noting that the USA tariffs were an example of "unilateralism and economic hegemony, which is unlikely to be accepted by any sovereign state".
