One lucky person wins Mega Millions lottery

The state lottery's verified Twitter feed says the winning ticket - worth more than $500 million - was sold at Ernie's Liquors in San Jose, California.

At least one lottery fan will wake up significantly richer on Wednesday after they purchased the only winning US Mega Millions ticket, worth US$522 million, in Tuesday's draw. The lucky numbers were 01-02-04-19-29.

To take home the entire $522 million, the victor would have to take an initial installment of $7.8 million, followed by 29 annual payments that increase each year.

This was the fifth largest jackpot in the history of the game.

According to Mega Millions, eight tickets matched the five main numbers to win the game's second prize. The jackpot has a cash option of $308 million, which is obviously still not a bad chunk of change.

The Mega Million jackpot won Tuesday night had been accumulating since it was last won in May in Ohio.

In total, there were 3,109,361 winning tickets Tuesday night at all prize levels, including the jackpot.

The largest Mega Millions lottery grand prize was $656 million in 2012.

Three winners from California, Florida and Tennessee shared the colossal amount, taking home a massive $327.8m (£248m) each.
