Estimated 230000 gallons of oil spilled

About 31 cars derailed after the tracks reportedly collapsed due to saturation from flood waters from adjacent Little Rock River.

Gov. Kim Reynolds visited the derailment site Saturday as part of a tour of areas hit by recent flooding.

Thirty-three oil tanker cars derailed Friday just south of Doon in Lyon County, leaking oil into surrounding floodwaters from the swollen Little Rock River.

Cleanup of an oil spill caused by the derailment of almost three dozen oil tankers in northwestern Iowa has begun.

BNSF had hazardous materials and environmental experts on the scene and had begun cleanup within hours of the derailment, Williams said.

The amount of oil spilled also wasn't known by Saturday afternoon, Williams said, but he added that officials hoped to have a better idea once they're able to reach the derailed oil tankers.

"We are containing the oil that was spilled as close to the incident as possible using containment booms and recovering it with skimmers and vacuum trucks", he said.

Leah Vanderbrink, of Doon, Iowa, said, "Around a quarter to five this morning, our neighbor called and said that a train derailed and had derailed into one of our fields".

Rock Valley, just southwest of the derailment, shut off its water wells within hours of the spill.

Tank cars carrying crude oil are shown derailed about a mile south of Doon, Iowa, Friday, June 22, 2018.

About 100,000 gallons had been hemmed off using booms out of the estimated 230,000 gallons spilled, BNSF said in a statement on Saturday.

While the cause for the derailment has not been officially determined, a disaster proclamation by the state's governor and local officials blamed flooding caused by two days of heavy rain for eroding the soil beneath the railroad tracks.

City spokesman Travis Olson says 12 blocks of the city with between 50 and 70 homes - were evacuated Thursday when the Rock River came out of its banks.

Williams says crews have been skimming oil from floodwaters.

The service has issued flood warnings for several other rivers and creeks in the area, including the Big and Little Sioux rivers, the Floyd River and the Ocheyedan River near Spencer.

It's also unclear how many cars derailed and what caused the derailment.
