"Angels in America", a sprawling two-part drama about the AIDS crisis, was named the year's Best Play Revival.

Past Tony champs slated to return to the stage to name new winners include John Leguizamo, Patti LuPone, Kelli O'Hara, Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Marissa Jaret Winokur.

Herzfeld encouraged many of her pupils to lead the nationwide movement for gun reform, including organizing the March For Our Lives demonstration and the charity single "Shine". He also dedicated the honour to "the countless LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) people who have fought and died for the right to live and love as we are created to".

But musical Mean Girls, based on the 2004 film, went away empty-handed after receiving 12 nominations.
