Kenny Troutt, owner of WinStar Farm accepted the newly designed Triple Crown trophy with Teo Ah King, the founder of China Horse Club. None of the other nine horses had a chance to catch him.

When Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, it was commonplace for Triple Crown champions to keep running, even as 4-year-olds.

The co-long shots in the field, now are Free Drop Billy, Restoring Hope and Vino Rosso.

Last year, Baffert won four races with Mor Spirit (Metropolitan Handicap), Abel Tasman (Acorn), American Anthem (Woody Stephens) and West Coast (Easy Goer).

Baffert, who also trained 2015 Triple Crown victor American Pharoah, defended the strategy of having Restoring Hope keep the pace. "Any Triple Crown victor is great for the sport". I felt on my watch, if he's happy, I'll keep him running.

As he thundered across the line to win the coveted Triple Crown, Justify's value skyrocketed to about $60 million with potential for more.

"If my horse would have broke on top, I would have been on the lead and Justify laying second".

The 4-5 favorite handled the 1.5-mile distance easily, and though runner-up Gronkowski was less than 2 lengths back, Justify never looked in danger of losing.

Such actions, if true, can be camouflaged by the helter-skelter run for position into the quick first turn of a one-circuit race like the Belmont. He's only won once, in a maiden race (meaning none of the horses had ever won).

"My first thought is that the Travers would be a good race for this horse if he were to break better and get a better pace to run at", said Brown. "It was just a great day, went smooth".

Vino Rosso finished fourth, followed by Tenfold, Bravazo, Free Drop Billy, Restoring Hope, Blended Citizen and Noble Indy. Among those in the crowd was Denise King of Raceland, Kentucky, who came to Churchill Downs with a friend and see a bit of history. The mile-and-a-half track at Belmont, significantly longer than the first two races in the Triple Crown, is known as the test of champions and the hardest race in the series.

But the New York State Gaming Commission confirmed that there were no plans for its steward, Steve Lewandowski, to discuss it with Geroux.

June 9, 2018 - Justify, ridden by Mike Smith, wins the 150th Belmont Stakes. "He's become a household name and I'm looking forward to his next race as much as [everyone else]".
