Manchester United's new midfielder Fred suffers "ankle trauma" in Brazil training

Fred suffered the knock before trying to carry on with the training session, only to then require treatment on the sidelines.

The Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro was the instigator of a fairly clean, not inauspicious, tackle at Tottenham Hotspur's Enfield training base on the training pitch, seemingly catching Fred's right leg, resulting in damage to his ankle below.

This would have been Fred's first World Cup tournament, having received seven caps for the national team since 2014.

It is too early to say, we have to see how he develops in the next 24 hours,"Brazil physician Rodrigo Lasmar said when asked for a full diagnosis on Thursday evening".

Brazil's Manchester United-bound midfielder Fred injured his ankle in training on Thursday, a week before the start of the World Cup in Russia, British media reported.

United have already agreed a fee with Shakhtar Donetsk for the player, while he has gone through his medial procedures as well.

"Today Fred had trauma in his ankle but it is too early to say anything about it", Lasmar said.

Brazil team-mate Marcelo was asked about the injury and told reporters it's "not that serious".

"I believe that it is not that bad, it is not a big issue and he will be back with us as soon as possible". They will also face group matches against Costa Rica and Serbia, before hopefully progressing to the knockout stages.
