Naperville officer rescues toddler running on Route 59

Last month, Mannino's dash cam captured a shocking sight showing a toddler running all by himself in the right lane of a busy highway.

Cars continue to drive by in the left lane as the scene unfolds.

The sergeant pulled over and parked his squad auto to block traffic in the lane.

"I have twin boys", he said.

Mannino was honored with a Life Saving Award from the police department Friday.

Mannino then got out on foot and chased after the boy, managing to quickly get him to safety as cars and tractor-trailers sped by. Mannino then tells dispatchers he would begin looking for the boy's parents.

A post on the Naperville Police Department's Facebook page says the incident occurred last month when the 1-year-old boy managed to slip out of his house.

"We attribute that to Sgt. Mannino's observation while on patrol and quick reaction, placing his squad vehicle and himself between the child and traffic", said the department on Facebook.

Mannino says the mother showed up moments later and "obviously was very emotional".
