Melania Steps Out: First Lady Attends Ford's Theatre Gala

The White House did not explain what led Melania Trump to seek treatment or whether the "benign kidney condition" meant she had a benign tumour or something else.

The Ford's Theatre gala is an annual event that honors Abraham Lincoln, and Melania took the stage to make a speech and honor the winner's of the Lincoln Medal.

The First Lady tweeted: "Thank you @Fordstheatre & the talented performers for a special evening celebrating the arts & the legacy of former President Lincoln".

"Tonight reminds all of us about the power the arts have in cultivating the American voice", the first lady said in a statement reported by Politico.

This gala comes six days after Melania made her return to public life at an event honoring Gold Star military families at the White House.

Dr Kelvin Hong, the director of the Johns Hopkins Interventional Radiology Center, said a four-hour operation to treat the condition described by the White House would be unusual.

Before departing for the G7 Summit in Quebec, Donald Trump told reporters that Melania would not be accompanying him because she was recovering from a "big operation", the New York Times reports.

In the hours afterward, aides wore scrubs around the first lady, a precaution that specialists said would be unnecessary for an embolisation procedure.

'Can't fly for one month, the doctors say, ' he said.

And the more the president and First Lady's office talk about the procedure, the murkier our understanding becomes. The specifics regarding what exactly was wrong with her have not been revealed, but Donald did confirm his wife "went through a little rough patch" and was "doing great" in the aftermath.

Her stylist addressed the first lady's fashion symbolism when he discussed her inauguration gown with Harper's Bazaar. We're not going to invite either team, but we have other teams that are know my attitude: if they want to be here - its the greatest place on Earth - I'm here. This time, though, she was without her husband, Donald Trump.

She thanked the Department of Health and Human Services for releasing information on how states can cover the cost of treating babies suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome, the painful withdrawal symptoms infants exposed to drugs in utero endure during their first few weeks of life.
