Body found after gator pulls woman into south Florida lake

"You know, this could have been one of us". This is a developing story.

In Broward County in May 2006, a 28-year-old woman was killed by an alligator at the North New River Canal in Sunrise, the FWC said.

While there are signs warning visitors not to swim in the lake, one resident criticized the park supervisors for not including signs specifically about the alligators and snakes in the park.

The park where the woman disappeared Friday is near the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, a major Miami-area tourist and entertainment attraction. While they are common today, over-hunting nearly drove American alligators to extinction in the 1950's.

State wildlife officials are now hunting for the alligator.

Edwin Gomez says he's at the park almost every day.

The FWC responded to the scene with trappers and worked for hours to catch the gator. She heard a hissing sound and believes it was coming from a 'gator.

Meanwhile, "her dogs won't leave the pond", Engle said.

Authorities have identified a woman who they say was bitten and probably killed by an alligator while she was out walking her dogs next to a Florida lake. News media earlier reported a caller told police he saw a gator drag a woman into the water as she was walking her dogs. A short time later, he said, he saw the dogs wandering alone.

Jim Borelli, a friend of the woman presumed missing, said she and her husband have walked their dogs in the park previously. An eye witness stated seeing the pet dogs with the owner and later the owner missing.

Trappers have spotted a 12-foot alligator in the pond in Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park, she said. The alligator was euthanized. "The FWC believes that the victim is deceased and we will continue recovery efforts on the lake with local authorities". Officials say she may have been snatched by the reptile while out walking with her dogs.

Local broadcaster WPLG said a human arm had been found inside the animal, which was captured in a pond at Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park.
