Andy Spade releases statement following wife Kate Spade's death

The businessman also condemned media speculation about Spade's "business problems" and "substance abuse" in the leadup to her death, and says he is "appalled" by reports of a note found in her apartment.

Spade, 55, was found by a housekeeper in her Park Avenue apartment Tuesday morning.

And following speculation, it's now been confirmed that the renowned fashion genius - who leaves behind husband of 24 years, Andy Spade, and their 13-year-old daughter Frances Beatrix - died from suicide.

He said she "sounded happy" the night before and her death was a complete shock.

"She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives", Spade said in a statement to The New York Times.

Andy Spade said he and his wife had chose to take a break and had lived in separate residences for 10 months.

"One thing we feel is that any talk that they do that helps somebody else, Katy would have liked that", he said. According to reports, the famed fashion designer fell into a deep depression after her husband Andy, right, moved out of their home and sought a divorce.

"There was a moment when you couldn't walk a block in NY without seeing one of her bags, which were just like her; colorful and unpretentious", Wintour said in a statement.

Her daughter is only thirteen years old and just lost her mother.

Andy Spade called his wife the kindest person he knew and said he can not fathom life without her. "But we certainly miss our bright, sun-shiney little person".

"We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how", he insisted. "We were co-parenting our lovely daughter".

Spade took a break from fashion until around 2015, when she and Andy rejoined with Arons to launch a new venture: Frances Valentine. We loved creating our businesses together.

He continued to say that his main focus now is the pair's teenage daughter, who Kate reportedly left a note to.

"That seemed to make her more comfortable, and we'd get sooo close to packing her bags, but - in the end, the "image" of her brand (happy-go-lucky Kate Spade) was more important for her to keep up". But it is sad and very hurtful, given the pain the family is enduring, that people with no real knowledge of the situation are leaking false, speculative information that maligns Kate's character and belittles the health issues she bravely fought.
