Crocodile kills pastor as he baptizes followers near lake

The crocodile dragged the pastor into Lake Abaya - situated in the southern city of Arba Minch - as those with him watched on, the Ethiopian news site Borkena reported.

The pastor, identified as Docho Eshete, died after being bitten on his legs, back and hands.

A Protestant pastor who was baptising followers near a lake in northern Ethiopia has been killed by a crocodile, police and residents have told BBC Amharic.

"He baptized the first person and he passed on to another one".

Members of the congregation, as well as fishermen on the lake, attempted to rescue the clergyman - an nearly impossible task.

A giant crocodile killed an African pastor as he was conducting a mass baptism.

Nearby fishermen used their nets to retrieve the body before the crocodile could drag it further into the lake. Nile crocodiles can grow up to 20 feet long and weigh more than 2,200 pounds.

Lake Abaya, which covers an area of 1,162 square kilometers is known for its significant crocodile population.

Conservationists say crocodile attacks are common throughout parts of Africa, where the animals live close to humans, according to the Telegraph.
