Israel Says F-35s See First-Ever Combat With IDF Over Syria

Gen. Amikam Norkin said addressing a military conference of air force commanders from around the world.

He also claimed that 100 Syrian anti-aircraft missiles were fired at Israeli jets during its retaliatory strike.

More than 20 countries were sending representatives, either the heads of their air forces or their deputies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, India, Vietnam, Poland, Romania, Canada, Finland, Brazil, Holland, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Belgium and Austria. "In our response attack, more than 100 ground to air missiles were fired at our planes", he said.

He detailed the Israeli point of view on the hostilities, which happened on the night of May 9 and involved the forces of Israel, Syria and Iran.

Israel was the first foreign state to obtain the US-made F-35, receiving the initial batch of two planes in December 2016, out of an order of 50.

The congressman believes that by recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, the USA would make it clear that it will never force Jerusalem to relinquish the territory.

Earlier in May 2018, Israel launched a large-scale attack on what it said were Iranian targets in Syria, raising fears of a major confrontation.

Those strikes followed a barrage of rockets that Israel said was sacked toward its forces in the occupied Golan Heights by Iran from Syria.

Iranian targets said to have been struck included, "intelligence sites, logistic facilities, military compounds, storage facilities as well as observations posts".

Twenty three fighters, including five Syrian regime troops and 18 other allied forces were said to have been killed in the Israeli attack.

Norkin also praised Israel's Arrow, Iron Dome and David's Sling aerial defense systems for their 85 percent success rate at intercepting foreign missile fire. Afterwards, we attacked dozens of Iranian targets in Syria'. It was seemingly the first time Israel attributed an attack directly to Iran rather than its proxies.

Israeli officials say that they have carried out multiple air strikes in Syria against suspected Iranian bases and those transferring weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

As with the United States' recent recognition that Jerusalem is Israel's capital city, the recognition that the Golan Heights can not be given back to Syria represents a factual reality on the ground, DeSantis said.
