Germany announce preliminary 35-man squad

Low has been the Germany head coach since 2006 and won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

But there is a notable absentee with World Cup final goal scorer Mario Gotze missing out.

Outgoing Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes said on Friday he was "very optimistic" over the 32-year-old's chances of participating in Germany's pre-tournament training camp.

The preliminary squad must be whittled down to just 23 players by June 4.

"Manuel is getting back into full training this week at Bayern Munich, that assures us that he can tolerate the full load in the training camp", explained Loew.

Oliver Kahn has raised doubts over Manuel Neuer's chances of playing for Germany at the World Cup. The defending World Cup champions are expected to be among the favourites to win the tournament in Russian Federation this year.

His club-mate Gotze, who scored the winning goal in the final as Germany triumphed four years ago, misses out, however, after struggling for fitness and form at Signal Iduna Park this term. "It's definitely not been his season".

"We saw that it was not his season, not the normal form with his quality", Loew told reporters.

Low instead selected Stuttgart's Mario Gomez and uncapped Freiburg striker Nils Petersen, who scored 15 league goals this past season - a record eight as a substitute and five from the penalty spot.

Ozil is in the squad despite suffering from a back injury while Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has also been called up even though he is now sidelined by a groin injury.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been named in the provisional squad, despite being out of action since breaking his foot in September.

Germany are in Group F with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in this summer's tournament in Russian Federation.
