Flags will be flown at half-staff for Peace Officers Memorial Day

(Clarinda) - Clarinda authorities invite the public to a special event remembering fallen law enforcement officers.

The names of 360 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty - including 129 who died in 2017 - were formally dedicated on Sunday evening, their names added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this spring. "We'll also be placing his name on our Peace Officers Memorial, both at the Sheriff's Office and our memorial site at the courthouse".

"Please say a prayer for the real families of these fallen officers, because as great as our loss was, theirs was greater".

Law enforcement all across the state were honored for their service Friday and that includes the local officers of the Interior.

It involves a memorial service that will begin at noon in front of City Hall on South Main Street, sponsored by the group Friends of the Mount Airy Police Department. As a reserve deputy, I have witnessed that same dedication.

It is important for everyone to remember that being a police officer can be, and very often is, a risky profession. By that act, its goal was defined "as a memorial to law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and in recognition of the selfless dedication of all law enforcement officers in the day-to-day performance of their duties".

Peace Officer Memorial Day was set in place back in 1962 by President Kennedy.

The Metropolitan King County Council today joined communities across the United States in recognition of National Police Week. Our nation's law enforcement officers face dangers every day, but now deliberate targeted attacks by people who wish to harm cops has become the new reality.

Mayor Ben Walsh remembered the officers the city has lost. "We also show our respects to their families, who have sacrificed incredibly, and we thank them so much".

"Sterling values the courage and devotion of our community's state and local police as our collective prosperity depends on the integrity with which our law enforcement officers maintain peace and security", Torres said.

Friday night's memorial and candlelight vigil were held as part of National Police Week, which ends on Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15.
