Machida scores KO in Belfort's UFC curtain call

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (24-8 MMA) added another spectacular knockout to his highlight reel at last night's UFC 224 event in Brazil.

Mackenzie Dern won against Amanda Cooper but the real drama had come at the weigh in, where Dern missed the 116lbs straweight limit for a non-title fight by a massive half a stone!

If there was ever a ideal place for Vitor Belfort to retire, then his homeland of Brazil would be the place he would have liked to end his professional career. Lyoto Machida had other plans at UFC 224, however. A well timed front kick to the face from Machida sent the 41 to the canvas, out cold before he hit the deck. It was similar to his front kick knockout of Randy Couture in 2011 and Belfort's infamous front kick knockout loss to Anderson Silva in 2011. So congratulations to Machida.

More than anything, I think there are just scores of people out there who are nowhere near as interested in the UFC now as they were six, eight, 10 years ago, and who only care about a handful of competitors but still fancy themselves hardcore fans - and the two just don't compute.

"He surprised me pretty well", Belfort said in his post-fight interview. He's done a lot for the sport. All I need is one strike to end the fight. It's hard to say who's better than who, but tonight I was better than he was. "So, I would like this fight because Michael Bisping is a former champion, and this is a fight that could happen in the future".

"I want to thank to thank the Tristar (team)".

First and foremost, this weekend's lineup is solid from top to bottom, offering a nice collection of familiar names, fringe contenders and important scraps, capped by a championship fight.

If this truly is the end for Belfort, then he can sign off knowing he enjoyed a long, successful and popular career from the second he appeared first in the promotion at the age of 19.
