Steven Gerrard a contender to take charge at Rangers

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers believes Steven Gerrard can cope with the expectancy of being Rangers boss, but admits being surprised the former Liverpool captain is in contention for the role.

The Liverpool icon is now the front-runner for the Rangers job, with club officials said to be confident of securing the 37-year-old's services.

The former Liverpool and England captain is now a youth development coach at Anfield after ending his playing career in 2016.

"I've seen the speculation over the last couple of days and I was a little bit surprised", Rodgers said on Friday.

"Clubs are interested in signing Stevie".

"He's always wanted to be a manager".

If the former Liverpool captain was to land the job, he would, of course, go head to head with his former boss Brendan Rodgers in Old Firm derbies. You never know when you are ready.

"Especially when it's your first job, it's not necessarily a club, it's about the right club".

Asked if, because of the singularity of the occasion, this derby would generate an exceptional atmosphere, the 27-year-old said: "It would be hard to have a different atmosphere than we've had before". "As far as I am concerned and the players are concerned, [Sunday's match against Celtic] is our biggest game of the season and we have to right a few wrongs".

"We focus on the pitch and let the guys above us focus on whoever is going to be in charge next year and we will deal with the task in hand, the football side, and the guys above us can deal with the coaching staff and managerial side".

"But playing football is totally different from coaching and managing obviously".

"I'm sure he will do a bit of due diligence on it and he has plenty of people he can turn to for advice".

"I think he has the potential to be a great manager". Then we started giving players on loan, which led to the situation that other players came into our squad.
