The knife-wielding man attacked the students near a secondary school in Mizhi County in Shaanxi province as they were heading home for the day, officials were quoted as saying.

Seven students were killed and 12 were injured in a stabbing attack outside of a school in Shaanxi, China, local authorities said Friday.

Among the dead were five girls and two boys, and the 12 wounded - nine girls and three boys - are receiving emergency treatment at the hospital, according to a government statement.

China tightly restricts private gun ownership, making knives and homemade explosives the most common weapons employed in violent crimes.

The country has seen a number of knife attacks in recent years.

Another user said it was necessary to take steps to stop more attacks.

In May, a man with mental health problems killed two people and injured 18 in south-west Guizhou province. In February, a knife-wielding man killed a woman and injured 12 people at a shopping centre in Beijing.

In January 2017, a man barged into a kindergarten classroom in China's southern Guangxi Zhuang region with a kitchen knife and stabbed 11 children.
