IPL 2018: After relinquishing captaincy, Gambhir offers to forego salary

Gautam Gambhir, who was picked for INR 2.8 Crore by Delhi Daredevils at the IPL 2018 auction, has chose to play for free for the franchise for the rest of season. Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to two titles in the T20 tournament and played global cricket for over a decade, said he was not able to handle the pressures of captaincy. The 23-year-old from Mumbai has scored fifties in the last two matches his team lost.

Delhi are now at the bottom of the IPL 2018 table after losing five of their six matches. Sometimes you realise that maybe I just couldn't handle the pressure which came with the position I was given.

"I am sure he will do a very good job and take this team forward". He, however, during the interaction with press said that it's too early for him to decide on the retirement. And looking at the position, I have chose to step down as captain.

Newly-appointed Iyer however, said that he is excited about the challenge which captaincy will bring to his plate.

Talking about Iyer, who will now lead the Delhi side in rest of the IPL 2018 season, said, "I just got the news today afternoon and I wasn't thinking much about it". They now languish at the bottom of the IPL 11 leaderboard with one win from six matches.

"True, that I've stepped down from DD captaincy".

Gautam Gambhir, who was the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders for over five seasons, was Delhi Daredevils' main buy this year. In the IPL circle it is said that a heavyweight Delhi politician had spoken to the Daredevils franchise following which Gambhir called the Kolkata Knight Riders management to request them not to use the matching card for him in the auction.

Gambhir, who played his 58th and most recent Test for India in 2016 against England, has fallen off the selectors' radar.

Ponting said: "We still have the potential to win the tournament". "I want to thank the management and my coaches for appointing me as the captain of the team". Ponting congratulated Gambhir for the "tough decision".

"I honestly believe we do have a chance to reach the playoffs, absolutely". They need seven wins out of the remaining eight games to qualify for the play-offs. "Make sure he is well prepared and have everything he needs". We've played well for 35 of the 40 overs.
