ALERT: New York Yankees Signing Free Agent Neil Walker

The Brewers should go back to the mb logo. Or even one rookie infielder, for that matter.

It was announced this morning that the Yankees have agreed to a deal with free agent 2nd Baseman Neil Walker. According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, it's a one-year deal believed to be worth around $5 million. Walker earned $17.2 million past year after accepting a qualifying offer from the Mets. The Yankees' second-base spot has been viewed as an open competition, with Tyler Wade leading a group that also includes Torres and Ronald Torreyes, plus non-roster invitees Danny Espinosa and Jace Peterson.

NY made a similar deal by acquiring Brandon Drury from the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this winter to start at third base should the prospects need more time to hone their games in the minors. They have roughly $22M to spend under the luxury tax threshold, so Walker fits the payroll nicely. There are still plenty of dollars to be spent. He still managed to bat.264 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI in 73 games. He has been primarily a second baseman in his career, though he played some first and third a year ago.

Maybe Gleyber Torres won't be the answer for the Yankees this season after all. Walker was dealt to Milwaukee on August 12.Walker recently told The New York Times that he had discussions with the Yankees this offseason, believing that he could bounce between first base, second base and third base. He can also fill in at first base and third base.

The Yankees were poised to wait out the market and sign a bargain free agent late in the offseason, and that is exactly what happened with Walker. Switch-hitter, too, so he adds versatility and he plays all over.
