Interior Department pays $139000 to fix doors in Zinke's office

The Trump administration is yet again defending a senior official's spending after it emerged the Department of the Interior spent almost $139,000 (£100,246) on Secretary Ryan Zinke's office door.

The Associated Press previously reported on the door contract Thursday.

Interior spokeswoman Heather Swift said that the project to fix the three double doors was requested by career facilities and security officials as part of a decade-long overhaul of the historic building, which was completed in 1936. Swift said Zinke agrees $139,000 is a lot of money for new doors.

A number of Trump Cabinet officials have been criticized for their spending habits.

A spokeswoman for Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke did not provide answers Thursday to questions about whether changes had been made to a door in the secretary's office. "This is a ideal example of why the secretary believes we need to reform procurement processes". "I spent six years in senior government positions & you can be damn straight that I would've known if somebody was spending $139000 on doors for my office".

"Taxpayer dollars don't grow on trees, but Mr. Zinke and his fellow grifters in the Trump administration repeatedly raid the federal treasury like it does", said EWG President Ken Cook. He spent $53,000 on three helicopter trips previous year, including one that allowed him to go on a horseback ride with Vice President Mike Pence.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price was forced to resign in September amid media reports he spent at least $400,000 in taxpayer funds on private jets for himself and his staff. Another $9,000 was spent for biometric locks and to have Pruitt's office swept for hidden listening devices. The order was later cancelled, according to Politico.

When asked about the details of the construction project, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke didn't respond.
