Hostages Being Held in Veterans Home in California

Earlier reports said the man was holding three people.

But Napa County Sheriff John Robertson told reporters that about 80 students were near the area where the hostages were taken but were never in danger.

"I don't have any idea what his motivation is".

Shots have been fired at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, north of Napa.

Officials said the conditions of the hostages were not known and they had not been able to reach the gunman by phone after trying for several hours.

CNN reports that the center is home to around 1,000 retired veterans and is the largest such facility in the country.

The law enforcement departments who have responded to the hostage situation include the Napa County Sheriff, Napa Police Department, Sonoma County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"There was an exchange of gunfire, fired by the suspect and our deputy", he said.

The FBI, SWAT teams, and California Highway Patrol also responded to the incident.

As many as 30 shots rang out near the facility's main dining hall, according to KQED.

The veterans home is an important part of the Napa Valley Community, with the 1,200-seat Lincoln Theater, a golf course and a large library, CalVet said.

Queen of The Valley Medical Center, a level 3 Trauma Center, is on standby at the hospital prepared to go to the Veterans Home if needed.

A shelter-in-place order is in effect and the veterans' home, one of the largest in the country, is on lockdown as authorities work to contain the situation. She has lived in Yountville since 1995 and said she's rattled about a shooting so close to home.

The county sheriff's office responded to a call at around 10:30 a.m. when the suspect allegedly walked into a party hosted by The Pathway Home.

Reports say a man wearing body armor and some kind of automatic weapon entered the facility and took three people hostage.
