Wenger urges Arsenal to seek Europa League lift

Arsenal took on AC Milan at San Siro on Thursday night in what was a crucial game for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Wenger has been widely criticised for a poor season at the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal sixth in the Premier League, out of the FA Cup, beaten in the Carabao Cup final and facing the daunting task of overcoming AC Milan in the Europa League.

Arsenal are on a run of four straight defeats in all competitions, their worst run of results in the last 16 years. We have a young team but still have players with lots of experience, so it's a good mix.

Three of those victories came at BATE Borisov, Red Star Belgrade and Ostersund, not particularly hard hunting grounds, and - having lost 4-0 the last time they faced AC Milan at the San Siro - not even history is on the side on Wenger and his players.

"[We need] to fix a reachable target", Wenger said in his pre-match press conference.

"Football is football. At the start we face three or four corners and one goes in and we are in trouble but you have to accept luck and coincidences".

"We were not in a position to take risks, but we could not be too cautious as you lose fluidity". "But it's not qualification, we still have to finish the job at home". The first one is always very important to play well - but last time we didn't. "You want to show you have the quality and the strength, and you can only show that when it is hard". You can only show that when it is hard.

"I don't give him much advice".

Wenger spoke before the game about his team showing fight without compromising their attacking principles - and they delivered in a dominant first-half performance.

Milan ended the first half without a shot on target and they almost started the second by gifting Arsenal another goal, with Donnarumma doing just enough to deny Welbeck after Franck Kessie wildly kicked the ball into the striker's path.

"It's definitely one of the most attractive ties I've ever played", Bonaventura said. He will be looking to continue his European goal scoring run, having netted six times in 11 European games this season.
