Samsung Slashes OLED Production on Slow iPhone X Sales

Countless reports have emerged suggesting that Apple's iPhone X is struggling to gain momentum among consumers and that sales are weak.

Apple will keep the 5.8-inch OLED phone and will also introduce an even bigger, 6.5-inch OLED device as well as a 6.1-inch phone with a lower-resolution LCD display, Kuo said - a prediction which has since been mirrored in a number of other reports.

Samsung apparently plans to make 20 million iPhone X OLED screens at most during the March quarter.

Despite being huge rivals in the smartphone market, Apple often turns to Samsung for manufacturing duties. That's when Apple's 2018 iPhones are supposed to be unveiled and launched.

Samsung has not decided its production target for the June quarter, but the company envisions further cutbacks in the second quarter. That's expected to not only include an update to the existing iPhone X, but see at least one more OLED handset join the line-up. Despite Apple claims of iPhone X sales that surpass expectations and top the charts week after week, the numbers don't seem to add up for Samsung. That's expected to form the entry-point into Apple's 2018 iPhone range as the cheapest model.

Conflicting answers of iPhone X sales have rippled through the smartphone industry.

Samsung did not immediately respond to our request for comment and Nikkei's report did not cite specific sources.

According to reports back in mid-2017, indeed, Apple was investing in LG Display's OLED production to bring the technology up to speed for its needs. But sales of the iPhone X haven't exactly gone to plan. To offset the impact, Samsung Display is trying to secure more orders from Chinese vendors. The rise of ASP (average sale price) to more than make up for disappointing volume appears to be helping out significantly. Made by the Samsung Display division, these panels have given Samsung an enviable edge in premium smartphone design.
