Lawyer admits he lied to investigators working for special counsel Mueller

Both Manafort and Gates were indicted previous year for alleged financial crimes involving their work in Ukraine that predated their work for the Trump campaign.

The charges filed in federal court in Washington DC are the latest sign of Mueller's investigation continuing momentum buildup.

Van der Zwaan is accused of misleading investigators about his work for a law firm that was employed by the Ukraine Ministry of Justice to put together a report about the trial of Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko.

Mueller and his team are investigating Russian election meddling and possible links between the Trump campaign and Russia.

It is unclear what role van der Zwaan played in crafting the report.

Khan, Van der Zwaan's father-in-law, is a billionaire and a part owner of Alfa Group, Russia's largest private banking group.

The charges also say Van Der Zwaan hid some emails from investigators.

Gates and Manafort would go on to become part of the Trump campaign. He pleaded not guilty at the time, but is expected to change that plea in the coming days. She is a political foe of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, whose political party was a client of Gates and Manafort.

Last week, Mueller indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for conducting an illegal "information warfare" campaign to disrupt the 2016 USA election to help Trump win the White House.

The interest in Van der Zwaan is likely linked to his work with Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager.

Van der Zwaan, 33, a Dutch national, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Washington. Both men have pleaded not guilty.

Also. according to Vogel, the law firm said it terminated its employment of Van der Zwaan in 2017 and has been "cooperating with authorities in connection with this matter".

Mueller's inquiry, the document said, concerned work van der Zwaan did in 2012 for a USA law firm that was hired by the Ukrainian Justice Ministry in connection with the trial of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Gates has reportedly made a decision to change his not guilty plea to guilty in exchange for leniency. Van der Zwaan also allegedly deleted emails sought by Mueller's office.

Ukraine's investigators have alleged that Yanukovych's government evaded Ukrainian publiccontracting rules by only paying Skadden $12,000 for the report-just below the threshold that would require a public bidding process-and then paying the firm $1.1 million a year later, with Skadden apparently having done no more work for Ukraine.

The intelligence report compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele contains salacious allegations against Trump and details connections between his close associates and and Russians.

Khan and his partners are suing Buzzfeed News over its publication of a dossier of allegations about ties between Trump and Russian Federation.

Her sentence was viewed by much of the global community - including Russian Federation - as political in nature. The alleged crimes pre-date his work for the Trump campaign.
